How to find lost AirPods

In short

Start with Apple's Find My app: it shows where your AirPods were last seen and can play a sound on them. When Find My only gets you to the right room, or the sound is muffled under a cushion, follow the AirPods' Bluetooth signal instead. A Bluetooth finder app like BlueKit shows their live signal strength and an estimated distance, so you can walk toward them until you find them. This works while the AirPods have battery, are out of a closed case and are within Bluetooth range (about 10 meters).

Step 1: Check Find My

If your AirPods are set up with your Apple Account, open the Find My app, tap Devices and choose your AirPods. You'll see where they are or were last seen on a map.

If the location is out of date, go to the last place shown and start the close-range search below.

When Find My isn't enough

Find My is great at getting you to the right place. The last few meters are where it gets hard:

This is where a Bluetooth signal finder helps. As long as your AirPods are powered on, they keep broadcasting a small Bluetooth signal, and your iPhone can measure how strong it is.

How the Bluetooth signal leads you to them

Bluetooth signal strength drops quickly with distance. That makes it a reliable hot-and-cold game: walk a few steps, pause, and see whether the signal gets stronger or weaker. BlueKit shows the signal on a five-level meter and turns it into an estimated distance in meters.

The distance is an estimate. Walls, furniture and bodies weaken the signal, so follow the trend over several seconds rather than any single number.

What the signal levels mean

Signal levelApprox. distanceWhat to do
5 of 5About 1 m or lessIt's right next to you. Check cushions, pockets, bags and under things.
4 of 5About 1–2 mYou're in the right spot. Search slowly in a small circle.
3 of 5About 2–5 mSame room. Move toward the stronger reading.
2 of 5About 5–10 mNearby. Try the next room or the other side of a large room.
1 of 510 m or moreEdge of range. Keep moving and watch for the signal to rise.

Why your AirPods might not show up

Where lost AirPods usually turn up

Find your AirPods step by step

  1. Check Find My. Open Find My, tap Devices and choose your AirPods to see their last location. Try Play Sound.
  2. Go to the last known place. Head to where Find My last saw them, or where you last remember using them.
  3. Scan with BlueKit. Open BlueKit with Bluetooth on. Your AirPods appear in the list of nearby devices.
  4. Pick your AirPods. Tap them to open their live signal strength and estimated distance.
  5. Walk slowly and watch the signal. Take a few steps, pause, and move in the direction where the signal rises and the distance falls.
  6. Turn on the alert. With BlueKit Premium, switch on sound or vibration so your iPhone tells you when you're within a few meters.
  7. Search the spot. When the signal is at its strongest, check cushions, pockets and bags within arm's reach.

Questions and answers

Can I find AirPods that are in their case?

Often not with Bluetooth, because AirPods in a closed case usually stop broadcasting. Find My can still show where the case was last seen, and some newer cases can play a sound.

Can I find AirPods with a dead battery?

Not with Bluetooth. A device with no power sends no signal. Find My shows their last known location from before the battery ran out, so start your search there.

Can I find a single lost AirPod?

Yes. A single AirPod out of its case still broadcasts while it has battery, so you can follow its signal the same way. Find My can also show the left and right AirPod separately.

Do I need BlueKit if I already have Find My?

Not always. Find My is the best first step. BlueKit helps with the last few meters, when the map shows the right place but not the exact spot, and with Bluetooth devices that aren't in your Find My.
